Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Funding

The Primary Care 2020/21 CPD allocation has been calculated using the September 2019 NHS Digital General Practice Workforce data.  This demonstrates the importance of employers ensuring this return is completed when requested as this has a direct impact on funding streams made available for training and education each year and supports workforce intelligence.

Is it ultimately the Nurse’s or the Allied Health Professional’s (AHP) decision about his/her learning need supported by the Primary Care Network (PCN).  In addition to the options for individual funding requests for specific learning requirements, STH are looking to deliver some training at scale in order to stretch the fund as far as possible!  For example the upcoming Women’s Health Hot Topics day (see Courses section below).

The Training Hub is committed to ensuring all staff in General Practice have equal access to learning and development opportunities to support the requirements of Primary Care.  This includes a commitment to ensure every eligible nurse and AHP (see list below) has access to the £1000 personal CPD budget (over 3 years  – completing in 2022/23) allocated by the chancellor in September 2019 as part of government’s pledge to secure a sustainable future for the NHS through the Long Term Plan.

Allied Health Professionals

  • Advanced Nurse Practitioners
  • Nurse Specialists
  • Extended Role Practice Nurses
  • Practice Nurses
  • Nursing Associates
  • Nursing Partners
  • Nurse Dispensers

Since re-launching the CPD process in March 2021, we have received nearly 40 applications for funding.

Here is reminder of the eligibility criteria:

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) funding is a Ministerial investment to support CPD for GPNs, Midwives and 14 x AHPs working in Primary Care.
  • CPD funding is available in order for staff employed and working in Primary Care to reach their full potential, stay up to date with the latest developments, continuing to update their skills and competences to meet changing future population health needs, effectively and safely.
  • Funding will be distributed and managed via eHEE Regional Offices, working with their ICS and administered by the regional Training Hubs.
  • £1,000 CPD funding is available to each GPN, Midwife and 14 x AHPs over a three year period.
  • If an individual or the PCN has identified a specific training need, the funding can be used for one, or multiple training courses or events, up to a maximum of £1,000 over a three year period.
  • CPD Funding does not cover mandatory training.

If you wish to apply for CPD Funding, please complete the attached CPD Application Form.  Upon receipt the Application Form will be processed, and a decision will be communicated to the individual and the Practice.

Course Feedback

A COVID-19 Personal Mental Wellbeing was held on the 24th March 2021 by Et Al training.  Anyone who has had the ‘Et Al experience’ before will tell you that it is anything BUT death by PowerPoint and refreshingly humorous with a bit of silly thrown in!

This course was aimed at Reception and Administration colleagues who are essential to running a Practice.  Our aim is to ensure that everyone in Primary Care benefits from investment into their development.

Please see extracts below from the Feedback we received regarding the course on 24 Mar 21.  If you are interested in this course, there are still places available on 25 June 21 (see Courses above for further information).

  • You’re both a tonic for the souls… maybe with a little gin added for sustenance
  • I have really appreciated you doing this for us
  • Thanks for letting us forget work and take time out to think about us
  • It’s been useful to take time out and reinforce my own thinking and coping strategies
  • Loved every minute very insightful

Updates from Dr. Donna Turfrey, Staffordshire Training Hub GP Facilitator

General Practice Fellowship Scheme

I would like to introduce myself as the newly appointed GP Facilitator for the Staffordshire Training Hub.

One part of my role is to launch the 2021 General Practice (GP) Fellowship Scheme for GPs across Staffordshire.

Here is a brief overview of our local scheme:

Funding: The Practice will now receive £7,200 per FTE (pro-rata), as back fill for the Fellow being able to participate in protected time.

Learning and Development: The Scheme will provide Leadership skills, Mentoring, Coaching, Teaching skills, Quality Improvement skills and opportunities to work with your local PCN.

We are hopeful that on completion of the second year the Fellows will have the knowledge, skills and confidence to contribute more fully to the Practice and local PCNs, and that the scheme will also help improve retention in the workforce.

External Mentors:  The Pilot scheme over the past year has relied on “in-house” Supervisors who have been paid back fill costs to support the Fellows.  In line with NHSE guidance, in-house Supervision will be replaced by “external” Mentors who will be recruited by the Staffordshire Training Hub, and employed through the “NHSE Supporting Mentors’ Scheme”.

We are confident that external Mentors will make it easier for the Practices to engage in the Scheme, and for smaller Practices, it will be less of a struggle to support more than one doctor to be released for this Scheme.

Drop-in Clinics: I am hosting two Drop-in Microsoft Teams where I will give a short presentation about the Scheme, and then allow ample time for questions and answers.

You are welcome to come along to a meeting if you feel that you need further clarification or information.

Monday, 19 April 21 at 1300-1400Hrs or Thursday, 6th May 21 at 1300-1400Hrs

If you would like to attend any of the above sessions, please register your interest with the Staffordshire Training Hub Team at [email protected].
